Construction & Design

  • Body: Hollow-body (semi-hollow) resembling an acoustic violin in shape. Constructed with a spruce top and maple back and sides

  • Center Block: Contemporary models often include a spruce center block for improved resonance and reduced feedback

  • Neck & Fingerboard:

    • Usually a three-piece neck of maple (sometimes reinforced with beech) with rosewood fingerboard

    • Scale length: 30 inches (about 76 cm), relatively short for easier playability and lighter feel

    • Nut width: approximately 42 mm

Electronics & Controls

  • Pickups: Equipped with two Höfner "Staple" humbucking pickups (model H511B), often nickel-plated (

  • Control Layout: Typically includes two volume knobs, on/off switches for each pickup, and a rhythm/solo switch offering a volume boost—this distinctive panel is instantly recognizable

  • Bridge & Tailpiece: Features an adjustable ebony bridge and metal trapeze tailpiece, echoing upright bass design cues

Tone & Performance

  • Acoustic Character: Hollow-body design gives it a tone resembling that of an upright bass, especially when used with flatwound strings—a deep, woody “thud”

  • Pickup Placement Evolution:

    • Pre-1962: Both pickups were mounted near the neck, producing similar tones when used individually.

    • Post-1962: The bridge pickup was moved closer to its respective position, yielding more tonal variety
