WL-20/WL-20L FAQ

 

Q: What kind of guitars can the transmitter (WL-T) be used with?
A:
It is installable on general guitars (Stratocaster type, Telecaster type, Les Paul type, SG type, electric acoustic guitars, and the like).

Note, however, that in the case of guitars that have special output specifications, sound might not be produced, or installation might be physically impossible.
Symptoms and their causes for respective different specifications, along with remedies, are highlighted below.

Some guitars equipped with active pickups
Symptom: No sound is produced. Guitar audio includes a thumping sound.
Cause: In the active circuits that guitars have, generally, TRS jack output is wired so that the tip is audio, the sleeve is the ground, and the ring is for the battery ground, but in some cases, there are guitars on which the ring and sleeve wiring is reversed (shown below).
Remedy: Try making the connection shown in remedy A or remedy B.

Some guitars on which installation is not possible
Symptom: The WL-T cannot be physically installed on the guitar.
Cause: Installation is impossible if the area at the mounting jack lacks enough space for attaching the transmitter (a cylindrical space measuring 18.5 mm in diameter and 5 mm deep).
Remedy: Try making the connection shown in remedy B.

YAMAHA Silent Guitar
Symptom: No sound is produced. The guitar is not powered.
Cause: The electrical wiring has special specifications, and so the no operation is possible without below remedy.
Remedy: Try making the connection shown in remedy A or remedy B in the figures above.

Instruments whose OUTPUT jack is stereo 1/4-inch phone type (TRS 1/4-inch phone type)
Symptom: Only the L-side signal is output.
Cause: The WL-T has monaural specifications, and so only the L-side (tip-side) signal is output.
Remedy: Because of the specifications, no remedy is available.


If remedies A and B do not correct the problem, try repeating the procedure below.
1.Remove the batteries or disconnect the power adapter from the guitar.
2.Attach the jack adapter plug to the transmitter and connect it to the guitar.

Q: The guitar sound contains high-frequency noise.
A:
It could be possible that the noise occurs because the guitar's internal circuitry and battery are too close to the transmitter (WL-T).
As shown in the figure below, make the connection to the guitar using a Mono Patch Cable (1/4" (M) - 1/4" (M)) and a Mono or Stereo Adapter (1/4" (F) - 1/4" (F)).

Q: The series offers ultra-low latency. What is the extent of the latency that occurs?
A:
Latency of 2.3 ms occurs.

Q: Is the transmitter (WL-T) compatible with the KATANA-AIR and the WL series?
A:
The transmitter (WL-T) can be used with the KATANA-AIR, WL-20, WL-20L, and WL-50.
The detection conditions when the transmitter changes to standby mode differ according to the device used.
The respective conditions set automatically when carrying out auto wireless connection are as follows.
  • KATANA-AIR: Vibration detection
  • WL-20, WL-20L, WL-50: Sound detection

Q: Is the rechargeable lithium-ion battery used in the transmitter/receiver replaceable?
A:
Replacement is not possible.

Q: Can the transmitter (WL-T) be used while it is charging?
A:
No, it cannot be used. Use it after charging.

Q: Can the WL-20 receiver be used while it is charging?
A:
The WL-20 receiver can be used while it is charging, but depending on the USB AC adapter you're using, power-source noise might cause drop-out in the audio output, and so using the receiver only after charging it is recommended.

Q: What kind of cable does CABLE TONE simulate?
A:
This does not simulate a single specific cable model, but instead simulates optimal characteristics based on measurements of the characteristics of a variety of cables and connected instruments.

Q: What are the electrical differences between the WL-20L and the WL-20? If the CABLE TONE feature is not required, can the WL-20L be used on a guitar equipped with a passive pickup (high-impedance output)?
A:
The differences between the WL-20L and the WL-20 are the presence or absence of the CABLE TONE feature in the receiver, and the color of the receiver unit.

If the CABLE TONE feature is not needed, you can use the WL-20L with a guitar equipped with a passive pickup (high-impedance output). In such cases, the sound tends to be somewhat brighter than when using a guitar cable.

    Guitar or bass having a preamp-equipped passive pickup
    Active-pickup guitar or bass
    Preamp-equipped acoustic-electric guitar

Other combinations
The WL-20L can also be uses with guitars equipped with a passive pickup (high-impedance output).
In such cases, the sound tends to be somewhat brighter than when using a guitar cable.
Conversely, you can also use the WL-20 on guitars equipped with an active pickup (low-impedance output) and preamp-equipped electric acoustic guitars.
In such cases, the sound tends to be somewhat warmer and softer than when using a guitar cable.

Another option: WL-50
On the WL-50, you can use the CABLE TONE switch to select OFF, SHORT (characteristics of a cable of approx. 3 meters), and LONG (characteristics of a cable of approx. 6 meters). For detailed information on the WL-50, refer to here.

Q: I usually use an electric-guitar cable when an acoustic-electric guitar or active-pickup guitar, so can I just purchase the WL-20 for the acoustic-electric guitar or active-pickup guitar?
A:
The low-impedance signals of acoustic-electric guitars, active pickups, and the like do not experience cable effects the way that (high-impedance output) guitars equipped with passive pickups do (*), and so we recommend the WL-20L.
* When using a guitar cable with a (high-impedance output) electric guitar or electric bass equipped with a passive pickup, a high band of the sound is affected naturally.

Use with the WL-20 is also possible, but in this case, the sound tends to be somewhat warmer and softer than when using a guitar cable.

Another option: WL-50
On the WL-50, you can use the CABLE TONE switch to select OFF, SHORT (characteristics of a cable of approx. 3 meters), and LONG (characteristics of a cable of approx. 6 meters). For detailed information on the WL-50, refer to here.

Q: I'm using a guitar that has both active and passive pickups, so should I purchase the WL-20, the WL-20L, or the WL-50?
A:
You can use any of the three (the WL-20, WL-20L, or WL-50), but we recommend the WL-50, which lets you switch the CABLE TONE feature.
* For information on the CABLE TONE feature, refer to this (the "WL-50: What kind of benefits does CABLE TONE provide?" link).
The CABLE TONE feature simulates cable effects during combinations of passive-pickup guitars and cables.
The low-impedance signals of an active-pickup or preamp-equipped acoustic-electric guitar or other such instrument do not experience cable effects, and so setting CABLE TONE to OFF is desirable.

Comparisons of the CABLE TONE feature
  • WL-50
    You can use the switch to select OFF, SHORT (characteristics of a cable of approx. 3 meters), and LONG (characteristics of a cable of approx. 6 meters).
  • WL-20
    The characteristic are of a cable of approx. 3 meters.
  • WL-20L
    This is off.
For Reference
  • When using the WL-20L with a passive-pickup guitar, the sound tends to be somewhat brighter than the sound when using a guitar cable.
  • When using the WL-20 with an active-pickup guitar or preamp-equipped acoustic-electric guitar, the sound tends to be somewhat warmer and softer than the sound when using a guitar cable.

Q: Can I use the WL-20L with a synthesizer?
A:
Use with a synthesizer is also possible.
Note, however, that with tones that have strong dynamics, such as square wave, piano, and xylophone tones, the sound is distorted depending on the keyboard range, and so raising the volume level is not possible.
Use the instrument with the volume adjusted to a lever where no sound distortion occurs.
Connect the transmitter to the synthesizer's OUTPUT jack.

Checking the connections
To determine whether connecting the transmitter and receiver to the equipment you're using is possible, download and check the WL-T (Transmitter) Outline and WL-20/WL-20L (Receiver) Outline available here.
If you want to use stereo sound, check whether simultaneous connection of two sets is possible.

Q: Does the WL-20L support stereo sound?
A:
The WL-20L is monaural.
If you want to use stereo sound, use two sets.

Checking the connections
To determine whether simultaneously connecting two sets of transmitters and receivers is possible, download and check the WL-T (Transmitter) Outline and WL-20/WL-20L (Receiver) Outline available here.

If the OUTPUT jack doubles as a PHONES jack, only a single transmitter can be directly connected.
In this case, only the left-channel sound is wirelessly transmitted.

Q: What are the external dimensions of the WL-20 and WL-20L?
A:

Q: What are the external dimensions of the transmitter?

Q: The sound from another guitar is heard.
A:
Are there another receiver and transmitter or Wi-Fi router nearby?
Make sure the Wi-Fi router and the receiver are at least 3 meters apart.

Also, carry out the Auto Wireless Connection procedure again.
If the symptoms persist, it means that radio-wave congestion is occurring in the 2.4-GHz band, and another wireless system is conflicting with the channel.
To eliminate the radio-wave congestion, turn off the power to any Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, and microwave ovens not in use, then redo the Auto Wireless Connection procedure.

Q: How can I use multiple wireless systems at the same time?
A:
To prevent interference in the wireless communication, carry out the following procedure.

  1. Turn off the power to the BOSS wireless systems.
  2. Turn on the power to any non-BOSS wireless systems, and ensure that sound is played without problem.
  3. First BOSS wireless system
    Turn on the power to the receiver, insert the transmitter, and carry out the Auto Wireless Connection procedure.
  4. Insert the transmitter into the guitar, making the BATTERY indicator light up.
  5. Second and subsequent BOSS wireless systems
    Repeat steps 3 and 4.

Q: The transmitter's BATTERY indicator is flashing in red. What should I do?
A:
A charging error has occurred. First, check the following points.

The transmitter's internal temperature might be elevated.
Charging is sometimes paused to protect the rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
When the internal temperature falls, the BATTERY indicator changes to lighting up steadily in orange, and charging resumes.
Detach the transmitter from the receiver and wait a short while before resuming use.

The ambient temperature might be 35 deg. C or higher.
Charging is sometimes paused to protect the rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
Use in the recommended ambient temperature range of 10 deg. C to 30 deg. C.

Q: The system was left unused for several days with the transmitter connected to the receiver's TRANSMITTER jack, and the battery ran down. Is this a malfunction?
A:
When the transmitter remains connected to the receiver's TRANSMITTER jack, the transmitter and receiver both go into standby mode, and a small amount of battery power is consumed.
When in standby mode, the BATTERY/POWER indicator flashes every 8 seconds.
When the system will be out of use for a lengthy period, we recommend detaching the connections and turning off the power.
