The Marshall 2266C Vintage Modern is a 50-watt, all-valve 2x12" guitar combo amplifier that originally debuted in 2007. Designed by Marshall's Steve Dawson, it was conceived as an organic, highly responsive evolution of the legendary early Marshall circuits. Today, it is highly sought after as a discontinued cult classic.
The Core Voice: KT66 Power Section
Unlike the vast majority of modern Marshalls that rely on EL34 tubes, the 2266C utilizes a pair of KT66 power valves (alongside four ECC83 preamp tubes). This mirrors the design of the original mid-1960s JTM45 and "Bluesbreaker" circuits, delivering a fat, smooth bottom end, a sweet midrange, and a creamy power-amp compression when pushed.
Dual Dynamic Ranges (Single Channel)
The 2266C operates as a single-channel amplifier, but features a footswitchable Dynamic Range toggle that changes how the preamp handles gain:
- Low Dynamic Range: Replicates the performance of a stock vintage Plexi or JTM45. It offers incredibly warm, glassy cleans and mild, organic blues-rock crunch.
- High Dynamic Range: Engages an extra preamp valve stage. This steps up the saturation into classic 70s and 80s hard rock territory, introducing heavy harmonic sustain without sacrificing the amp's vintage voice.
Frequency-Selective Preamp Shaping
Instead of a traditional single gain knob, the Vintage Modern uses two distinct preamp controls to shape distortion character:
- Detail: Controls the gain levels of the higher, bitey frequencies.
- Body: Controls the gain levels of the lower, throatier frequencies.
By blending Detail and Body together, players can perfectly tailor the amplifier's overdrive to match single-coil or humbucker pickups without losing clarity.
Built-in Hendrix Speakers
The 2266C combo is equipped with two 12" Celestion G12C Greenback speakers. These specific speakers were originally developed by Celestion exclusively for the limited-edition Jimi Hendrix Super100JH tribute stack. They are voiced to offer a faithful reproduction of late-60s Greenbacks, providing woody, vintage speaker breakup and a smooth high-end roll-off.

- Cabinet Styling: Built with a heavy steel chassis inside a tough ply cabinet. It features a unique, dark purple-and-black flecked vinyl covering (Tolex) that shifts hues depending on how light hits the stage.
- Equalisation: Standard Bass, Middle, Treble, and Presence array.
- Mid Boost: A front-panel switch that beefs up the core midrange, ideal for giving single-coil guitars a thicker, humbucker-like punch.
- Effects & Master: Includes a built-in digital plate reverb and a master volume control, alongside a true bypass series FX loop on the back panel with selectable signal levels (-10dB / +4dB).
