The Roland U-110 is a rack-mounted PCM sound module released in 1988. It’s an early example of a ROMpler, meaning it plays back pre-recorded samples rather than generating sounds from synthesis.
The soundcards included are:
1U rackmount sound module (no keyboard)
Controlled via MIDI
One of Roland’s first fully sample-based modules
Designed for studio and live use
Uses PCM (sample playback) synthesis
Around 2MB of internal sample data with roughly 99 waveforms
Focused on:
Acoustic instruments (pianos, strings, brass)
Basic band and orchestral sounds
31-note polyphony
Up to 6-part multitimbral operation
This allows multiple sounds (like bass, strings, and drums) to play simultaneously via MIDI.
4 front-panel slots for expansion cards
Compatible with SN-U110 PCM cards
Expansion libraries include:
Orchestral sounds
Guitars
Synth textures
Drums and effects
Very limited editing options:
Basic envelope controls (attack and release)
Built-in effects:
Chorus
Tremolo / auto-pan
No filters or deep sound design features.
MIDI In, Out, and Thru
Stereo outputs
Up to 6 individual outputs for separate mixing
This made it useful for multi-track studio setups.

Small LCD display (2-line)
Simple button-based navigation
Front-panel headphone jack
Aimed at realistic instrument sounds (for its time)
Clean but somewhat thin by modern standards
Classic late-80s digital tone
Early and influential sample-based module
Expandable sound library
Multiple outputs for flexible routing
Reliable MIDI performance
MIDI sequencing setups
Late-80s and early-90s studio rigs
Layering basic instrument sounds
The Roland U-110 is a simple, historically important rack module that helped popularize sample-based sound generation. Today, it’s mainly valued for its vintage digital character and straightforward functionality in retro setups.
