The Stagg EDB-3/4 is an affordable 3/4-size electric upright/double bass designed to give players the feel and extended scale of a traditional upright without the size, acoustic volume and transport problems of a full acoustic double bass.

It is particularly suited to jazz, blues, rockabilly, folk, country and recording, and is also a practical way for an electric bass player to get into upright playing.

Sound

The EDB-3/4 is designed to produce an upright-style amplified sound, rather than attempting to reproduce the full acoustic sound of a large wooden double bass.

Its sound is generally warm, woody and mellow, with enough definition for jazz, blues and rockabilly. It can produce a convincing amplified upright character when properly set up, although it has a more obviously "electric" character when played without amplification.

The active bass control provides useful control over the low end, while the headphone circuit makes it particularly convenient for quiet practice.

Playing experience

One of its biggest advantages is portability. Its slim body makes it considerably easier to transport than a conventional double bass.

It retains the long 3/4 upright scale, however, so it feels substantially more like a double bass than a conventional electric bass guitar. This makes it useful for developing upright technique without immediately buying or transporting an acoustic bass.

The supplied support system is somewhat unusual. Some players find it useful, while others prefer to remove the supports and play the instrument more like a traditional "stick" upright.

Strengths
